Blade Nano QX Review: A Complete Guide

The Blade Nano QX is one of the smallest and lightest beginner quadcopters you can buy. It’s constructed from a lightweight material, and weighs in at just about 18 grams.

Still, the body is surprisingly flexible and durable, allowing it to stand the test of time. You can buy this quadcopter in yellow or green, and fly it indoors or outdoors.

As you can see from its picture, the drone comes with four prop guards, each of which protect the drone’s propellers.

This definitely makes the drone more protected against scraps and bangs (which is quite common if you’re a beginner flyer). In this Blade Nano QX review, we’ll show you everything it has to offer.

Blade Nano QX Review – Overview

This nano quadcopter is great for both beginner and advanced flyers. Keep in mind that this is a BNF model (explained here).

By that, it means that you need to already have a transmitter when you buy it.

Otherwise, you won’t be able to fly. The drone is fairly small, allowing you to quickly change directions. Due to being so lightweight, you can fly it inside without a problem.

Update: As it turns out, there’s also a RTF version of this quadcopter that I didn’t know existed. Granted, it’s going to cost a little more, but that’s because it comes with the transmitter. But if you’re an experienced flyer who already owns a transmitter, there’s no sense in spending the extra money on the RTF version (go with the BNF version instead).

Accomplishments

In 2014, this quadcopter was awarded the Editors’ Choice Innovation of the Year Award by Model Airplane News.

This says a lot about this drone’s capabilities, durability, and value. Additionally, it’s made by Blade, a company well-known for creating amazing quadcopters (including the 180 QX and 200 QX).

SAFE Technology

No Blade Nano QX review would be complete without talking about the drone’s SAFE technology. SAFE is an acronym for Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope. You don’t need to understand how the technology works to take advantage of it.

Basically, it will keep the quadcopter more stable in the air. So even if you’re a beginner drone flyer with no experience, you can feel more confident behind the controls. The technology should result in fewer crashes as well as allow you to push your drone to its limits while staying in control.

Pros

The SAFE technology is one of the drone’s biggest pros. Due to its lightweight size, it is a very agile and fast model. It responds to the transmitter very quickly, so if you press the joy stick left, it’s going to go left without any lag in-between. We also like the fact that the drone was designed with both beginner and advanced flyers in mind.

Cons

In all honesty, there aren’t too many cons to this model. The only potential downside that we can think of is that for about the same price, you can get something bigger and better (like the Syma X8C for example). This isn’t really a drawback though, since the Syma X8C is designed for capturing high-flying aerial photos/footage.

How Does It Handle?

In this part of the review, we’re going to talk about the drone’s flight control. This drone flies fast, and it flies aggressively. The only thing you need to worry about is flying in the wind.

Since it’s so light, even light breezes can cause you to lose control. With that said, it’s an awesome indoor flyer which you definitely need to fly to truly appreciate. To give you a taste of how it flies, here’s a video review and flight test:

Remember that this drone doesn’t come with a camera nor does it have FPV capabilities.

This means that if it goes out of sight, you’ll risk losing it. Always keep the Blade Nano QX within eyesight. As you can see from the video, it flies very well, so whether you’re a beginner or advanced flyer, you’re going to have a lot of fun with it.

Flight and Charging Time

If you’re like most flyers, you probably care a lot about a drone’s flight time. You’re probably also frustrated by how short they can be (we totally agree!).

The QX’s flight time is pretty good, clocking in at about 8 minutes. Once the battery dies, it will take approximately 40 minutes to charge it back to maximum capacity.

If you’re disappointed in this flight time, then check out the Dromida Ominus, which gets a flight time of about 10-12 minutes. The drone comes with a USB charger that plugs directly into your computer for easy charging.

A Tough and Durable Frame

Most people think that because this drone is small and lightweight that it’s more prone to breaking upon impact.

But when it comes to quadcopters, the opposite is true: lighter drones have a better chance of surviving a crash. That’s because the impacts involve less force hitting the ground.

If you were to drop something like the DJI Phantom 4 from the same height, it would certainly break. Note in this review that this quadcopter can take a beating and keep on coming back for more. For this reason, it’s a great model for teenagers.

RTF Transmitter

There’s an RTF and BNF version of this drone. Let’s spend some time talking about the RTF version, specifically, the transmitter.

The QX’s transmitter is fairly basic in design: it has two joysticks, trim buttons, a power button, etc. At the push of a button, you can make the drone more or less sensitive.

The more sensitive it is, the easier it will be to fly fast and aggressively. The less sensitive it is, the more conservatively you’ll be able to fly. Finally, transmitter is made from cheap plastic so try not to drop it!

Blade Nano QX Review – Bottom Line

In summary, this drone comes with an 8-minute flight time, charges in about 40 minutes, offers SAFE technology, and has a durable frame (with prop guards). Priced affordably, that’s a steal!

If you’re looking for a fun, safe, and aggressive indoor flyer that won’t break the bank, then the Blade Nano QX is the model to do it with. If you have any questions about this model, then leave them in the comments section below. Thanks for reading. Good luck and fly safe.
