What do you need to know before buying a drone?

While they might seem like a fun little gadget that may not necessarily ‘break the bank’, it’s important to understand that the features on an entry level drone will vary quite significantly to one professionals would invest in for aerial surveying and the likes.

Here is what you can expect of many of the specifications and features of an entry level drone that’s under $500.

  • Average Flight Time
  • Average Control Range
  • Average Performance
  • Average Features
  • Average Camera Quality

For most entry level drones, you can expect to see an average flight time greater than 10 minutes, however, usually no more than 18 minutes. In saying this, some brands will specialise in extended flight times as a key point of difference. Often, the size of the drone (and therefore the size of the battery) will indicate its average flight time.

With this in mind, let’s now get into the information you’ve been waiting for – what are the best drones you can buy for less than $500.

DJI have taken everything they have learned about drones, cameras and technology and crammed it into their smallest drone yet, the Mavic Mini. At just 249 grams and about the size of your palm, this quadcopter is incredibly portable, while still delivering exceptional performance during its flights.

It may have compromised on some of the higher end features a professional photographer or highly experienced drone pilot may be after, but for the most part, this drone ticks all of the boxes in what it has to offer the general user, all at an exceptional price. It is extremely easy to carry around in a backpack or your pocket and is ideal for holidays, filming outdoor events and vlogging

Our rating

The reputation and quality of DJI products are second to none, and the Mavic Mini is what I consider a remarkable masterpiece.

Tech Specifications

  • 249g total weight - therefore does not require FAA registration when flown recreationally
  • 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor
  • 24mm equivalent lens (83º FOV)
  • Fixed F2.8 aperture
  • 12MP photo resolution
  • 2.7K/30p and 1080/30p video
  • 30-minute flight time
  • Comes with a remote controller
  • Has a 3-axis gimbal-stabilized camera
  • Can fly up to 500m (1,600 feet) above ground level

Camera

The camera on the DJI Mavic mini isn’t what the pros would be after since the output of the images are in jpeg only, not the raw image file, but for an everyday vlogger or budding photographer, you won’t be disappointed. The camera is mounted on a 3-axis stabilized gimbal. It captures 12MP images and captured videos at 2.7K Quad HD resolution, with a 30fps frame rate. This provides similar quality photos and videos to other Mavic products if you have ever tired others, such as the Mavic Air and Mavic Pro Platinum.

The Mavic mini has a maximum of 2.7K/30p or 1080/60p footage, captured at a bitrate of 40 Mbps using the H.264 codec. When I use this drone for photography and vlogging purposes, I tend to adjust the exposure compensation settings to avoid blowing out sensitive areas in the sky. This is because the DJI does not have the ability to adjust the shutter speed like some of the other models it has released.

It’s great to see that the Mavic mini can easily transmit Live Video in high-quality, real-time with no delay or latency – it really is one of the best FPV experiences you can get from a drone for under $500.

Features

The DJI Mavic Mini uses two vision positioning sensors located on the bottom of the drone in place of obstacle avoidance sensors. These make it ideal for flying this quadcopter indoors, giving it the ability to hover in place, even without GPS.

The Mini’s battery is certainly a stellar feature, allowing you to fly the drone for an impressive 30 minutes at a time. This is very good considering the small size of this drone, with it outlasting other models such as the Spark and Mavic Air. While DJI’s Mavic Mini can fly up to 500 meters above ground level and boasts a range of up to 4 kilometres, I personally am not comfortable flying it more than about 1,000 - 1,500 feet away.

There is no internal storage within this drone, instead, housing a MicroSD card which is located just beneath the battery portal.

The DJI Mavic Mini is the type of drone that is likely to appeal to beginners looking for a budget-friendly option to kick-off their flying experience, and hobbyists who are seeking a portable and simple drone to capture their experiences.

PROS

  • Smart, collapsible design
  • Incredibly stable video capture
  • Exceptional battery life – impressive 30 minute flight time
  • No registration needed

CONS

  • No 4K or 60fps 2.7K video.
  • Lacks some camera features
  • Fewer smart modes compared to other DJI products, including no object tracking
  • Micro USB charging, not USB-C

Camera

Like many, the Altair Aerial Outlaw SE drone includes a built-in camera which takes 1920x1080 still pictures. This image quality is good, but not outstanding when compared to others that have attachments for GoPro and other external cameras. Some of the video and images can be slightly distorted possibly due to lack of stabilisation or the use of a wide-angle lens. While it does the trick and is a nice feature to have on a drone, I simply wanted to reiterate that this isn’t the type of drone an avid photographer will use and does not compare to image quality on your smartphone.

Features

The Altair Aerial Outlaw SE is easily connected to your smartphone via WiFi, allowing you to see exactly what the camera is seeing; this makes it easier to fly and take photos. It’s also a bonus that with the Walker Rodeo 150 you can easily and readily transmit the video from your drone to your smart phone easily and without any delay.

Features

For beginners using the Walkera 15 drone, I recommend you start your flight with the stabilised mode enables before moving onto the intermediate features – this quadcopter is certainly zippy and highly responsive! This flight performance creates for a very exciting flight for users of all skills.

The Walkera Rodeo 150 drone’s light weight means that it can fly quickly, but also turn effectively and accurately in the sky. And if you’re racing during low light conditions, you can rest assured that you’ll stand out from the crowd. #9 – Hubsan H5O1S X4 drone

The reputable Hubsan’s H501S X4 was released in 2015, but is still a standout in the market today. Why? We can safely assume this is because of its many rich features which subsequently enable a very high quality performance when flying a drone, all at an affordable price.
